Sid Burns: Jewish Contender for The Welterweight title of the British Empire - Book Project by Jeremy Burns and Jeffrey Loew

Subject: Sid Burns: Jewish Contender for The Welterweight title of the British Empire

Authors – Jeremy Burns and Jeffrey Loew

Sid Burns was the great-uncle of Jeremy Burns, one of the co-authors of this project. We intend to write an account of Sid Burns and his times.

Burns was a significant figure in British boxing in the years surrounding the First World War. He twice fought Johnny Summers in title matches, once for the title of English Welterweight Champion and once for Welterweight Champion of the British Empire (in Australia), losing on points in each match. He also fought American Mike Gibbons at Madison Square Garden. He retired in 1920.

Burns was born in 1890 in Aldgate, near Whitechapel. We’re interested in anything that sheds light on Burns’ experience as an East End Jewish fighter in the early twentieth century. Of interest, for example, are his involvement in the Judaeans Athletic Club, Mendoza’s continued influence on fighters in the area, info on the Wonderland venue in Whitechapel, Burns’ opponents like Summers and Sid Stagg, his fight with the immortal George Carpentier, his fight with Gibbons (and info about Gibbons generally), and his travel to Australia and his final fight in 1920 in Berlin.

Burns is also reported to have a complex relationship with his former sparring partner, Hall of Famer Ted “Kid” Lewis, which became an intense rivalry. Any info on this relationship is of particular interest.

Finally, Sid Burns’ son, Sam Burns, was a great character who worked closely with legendary promoter and manager Jack Solomons. Any info about Sam is also greatly appreciated.

We’re looking for stories, news accounts, letters, diaries, photographs – basically anything that will help shed light on Sid’s life and milieu – and provide visual references for our artist. Any personal stories or personal contacts to families of fighters, managers, sports writers, etc., would be greatly appreciated. All assistance will of course be acknowledged in the book.

Thank you.
